Land Management Plan | O'Hallorans Rd
A seasonal land management plan developed to restore biodiversity and soil health on a rural property near Mansfield, Victoria. The plan outlines practical actions including woody weed removal, composting, cool burning, and native revegetation. Designed to regenerate the landscape, improve water retention, and create long-term ecological resilience.
Project Overview
Set within the foothills outside Mansfield, this property sits in a transitional landscape where cleared grazing country meets remnant woodland. Years of altered fire regimes, grazing pressure, and woody weed encroachment had reduced native groundcover diversity and limited the land’s natural capacity to retain moisture and cycle nutrients.
Our role was to develop a practical, staged plan that works with the seasons
Approach
This plan was grounded in on-site assessment, ecological mapping, and conversations with the landholder about long-term aspirations for the property. Rather than prescribing a one-off intervention, the strategy focuses on cumulative gains over time.
Key components include:
Woody Weed Removal
Targeted removal of invasive species to reduce competition, open canopy structure, and allow native grasses and forbs to re-establish.Compost & Soil Building
Application of compost and organic matter to increase microbial activity, improve soil structure, and enhance water infiltration and retention.Cool Burning
Low-intensity seasonal burns designed to reduce fuel loads, stimulate native regeneration, and restore ecological processes shaped by fire.Native Revegetation
Strategic planting and assisted natural regeneration using locally indigenous species to rebuild habitat layers and improve landscape connectivity.
Long-Term Vision
Regeneration is not linear. Timing interventions to rainfall patterns, temperature shifts, and ecological cycles significantly improves outcomes. This plan aligns works with seasonal windows. From autumn soil building to winter revegetation and spring monitoring, ensuring each action builds on the last.
The O’Hallorans Rd property is being stewarded with a 10+ year horizon. This plan provides a framework that is adaptive and responsive, designed to evolve as the land responds.
It’s not just about restoring what was here.
It’s about creating a resilient, functioning landscape that can withstand drought, fire, and changing climate conditions while remaining productive.
Outcomes
Increased native groundcover diversity
Improved soil carbon and biological activity
Greater water-holding capacity across the site
Reduced bushfire risk through active fuel management
Stronger habitat corridors for birds, insects, and small mammals
